Spotify Launches Paid Podcast Memberships and Lets Creators Keep 90%

Podcasters can sell tiers with bonus episodes, fewer ads or early access in 34 markets, including the U.S.

Spotify launched paid memberships for podcasts on October 20, according to TechCrunch. Creators can offer fans bonus audio or video, fewer ads, early access, or a mix, and can set multiple tiers and prices. The rollout covers 34 markets, including the U.S.

TechCrunch reports creators keep 90% of membership revenue. To qualify, a show must be hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone, with at least 100 consumption hours, at least 100 listeners or viewers, and at least three published episodes. Fans subscribe and pay on the web, not through in-app purchases, and memberships appear on the show's Spotify page.

Launch shows include The Adam Friedland Show, Making Sense with Sam Harris and the Shawn Ryan Show. Membership badges and welcome clips are coming soon. The article did not list prices.

Why it matters for your business

If you publish a podcast or video show for your business, check whether you meet the three requirements and whether your host is supported. Decide now what a paying tier would offer that your free feed does not.
