Canva Releases Canva Craft, Its First In-House Image Generation Model

The design company built its own image model for posters, social posts and infographics, with legible text as a stated goal.

Canva has released Canva Craft, the first image generation model built by its own research team, according to TechCrunch on October 22, 2026. Canva says the model first plans an image, including layout, relative scale, visual hierarchy and the text to include, and then generates it at up to 2K resolution in 30 aspect ratios.

Canva says Craft was trained on human-designed templates from its library, such as posters, social posts, presentations and infographics, rather than photographs, and that this gives it accurate details and readable text. It also says you can make precise edits without changing the rest of the image. Images can be turned into layered, editable designs with Canva Magic.

TechCrunch reports that Craft is available to all users in the Dream Lab tab on Canva and through the Canva API. Canva plans to bring image generation to chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini through its MCP connection, with no date given. Two cheaper versions, Craftfast and Craft-ultrafast, are coming "soon." The article does not mention pricing. These are Canva's own claims, and TechCrunch notes Canva expects the model to cut what it pays for third-party image models.

Why it matters for your business

If you make social graphics or flyers, try Craft in Dream Lab with a prompt that includes the exact words you want on the image, then check the spelling before you post. Compare the result with what you get from your current image tool before you switch.
