Google Starts Testing Ads in AI Mode for People Who Connect Their Apps
Google had said these Personal Intelligence sessions would be ad-free. Now it is testing ads in them.
Google told Search Engine Land on October 16 that it is starting to test ads in AI Mode for signed-in users who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence, according to Search Engine Roundtable. In March, Google had said there were no ads for people who connect their apps to AI Mode.
Google's updated help page says summaries, excerpts and inferences from connected apps may be used to show ads, but that ads will not be based directly on your Gmail inbox or Google Photos library. Advertisers do not get access to the connected apps, and Google says it does not personalize ads by sensitive categories such as race, religion, sexual orientation or health. People choose whether to connect apps and can disconnect them at any time.
Google calls this a test, not a launch. Coverage notes that open questions remain: which countries are included, which ad formats can appear, and whether advertisers can opt in or out or see this traffic reported separately.
If you advertise on Google, expect AI Mode to become another place your ads can appear, and ask your ad rep or check your account for any controls as they arrive. If you use Personal Intelligence yourself, review which apps you have connected, since that content can now shape the ads you see.
