Google Adds Gemini 4 Argon to AI Mode for Pro and Ultra Subscribers
The newer Gemini model is rolling out as a choice in Google Search's AI Mode, but free users see no change.
Google has added its Gemini 4 Argon model to the AI Mode model menu in Search for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, according to Search Engine Journal. Google's Robby Stein announced on X that it is rolling out globally in Search, and subscribers pick it with the "+" icon in the "Ask anything" bar.
Google says Argon handles nuanced, multi-step tasks better and follows instructions and style requests more closely in back-and-forth conversations. On the same day, Argon also became available to developers, enterprises and Gemini app users. Developers get it through the paid tier of the Gemini API, and Ultra subscribers can use it in Google's coding tool Antigravity.
The rollout is staged, so it may not show up for you right away. The Search Engine Journal writer had not yet seen it on their own Pro account when checking. Free AI Mode users keep the same default, and Google has not said whether Argon will become the default or which other Gemini 4 models will come to AI Mode.
AI Mode is now a place where customers research products and services, so it is worth asking it a few questions about your own business and checking the answers for errors. If you pay for Google AI Pro, try Argon on a real task, such as drafting a competitor summary, and compare it with the default.
