Replit Makes OpenAI Its Default Model Over Anthropic, CEO Tells TechCrunch

The AI coding platform says OpenAI's models build apps from scratch better, though customers can still pick Claude.

Replit, the cloud AI coding platform, is no longer working with Anthropic, CEO Amjad Masad said at TechCrunch Disrupt, according to TechCrunch. He cited cost, partnership terms and performance, and said OpenAI's models do better at building apps from scratch in internal and public benchmarks.

Masad later clarified that customers can still choose Anthropic's Claude models, but ChatGPT is now the default for Replit Agent. TechCrunch notes that most people keep the default, so Anthropic's revenue from Replit could drop sharply. The account is disputed: an insider told TechCrunch the partnership was still in place, and Masad said Replit remains model agnostic.

TechCrunch also reports that enterprise made up about 2% of Replit's revenue last year and roughly 15% this year, and that more than half of revenue now comes from business customers.

Why it matters for your business

If you build apps or automations on Replit, check which model your projects now use and whether results or costs have changed. It is also a reminder not to tie a business process to one AI vendor: keep your prompts and data portable.
