OpenAI Sets January 14 Shutdown for GPT-4o and GPT-4.1 API Models

Any automation or app still calling these models needs a new model name before the cutoff.

OpenAI posted a deprecation notice on October 14 saying four model families will be removed from its API on January 14, 2027, according to the OpenAI API deprecations page. The list covers GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini, including the dated snapshots named on the page.

OpenAI recommends gpt-6-luna as the replacement for all four. Fine-tuned versions of these models follow the same shutdown date as their base models.

This is an API change. It affects tools that call the models by name, such as custom GPT-style apps, Zapier or Make steps that use an OpenAI model, and anything a developer or agency built for you. It does not change what you pick in the ChatGPT app.

Why it matters for your business

Ask whoever built your automations which model they call. If it is one of these four, schedule a swap and a test run well before January 14, since a newer model can answer in a different tone or format. If you use fine-tuned versions, plan more time.
