Google Cloud Releases the Gemini Agent, Plus Coworker Agents With Their Own Email

Google says one prompt box can now handle questions, documents and code, and agents can join your team in Workspace.

Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent on October 8, according to its own Gemini at Work 2026 post, adapted from a keynote by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian. Google describes it as one agent for work that answers questions, handles knowledge work, makes images and media, and writes and runs code from a single prompt box.

The part most useful to small teams is inside Google Workspace. Gemini works in Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar, and Google says it already knows your calendar, team and projects. It can also offer a one-click option to hand a task, such as a project update deck, over to Gemini.

Google also introduced "coworker agents." You describe a role, and Gemini creates an agent with its own Workspace account, including an email address, calendar and Drive. Teammates can add it to a Chat space or @mention it. Google says it sees only what you share with it, and its edits show under its own name in version history.

For control, Google lists per-agent identities, role-based permissions, an audit trail, and real-time spend caps. If a project hits its cap, that project's agent pauses until someone resumes it. Google's post gives no general availability date or pricing for the Gemini agent itself. Industry versions for financial services and legal are in preview.

Why it matters for your business

If your team already lives in Google Workspace, watch for these features in your admin console and try one low-risk task first, like a weekly status deck. Before you let any agent act on its own, decide what it may see and set a spending limit. Ask Google or your reseller about pricing, since none was published.
